Soy Candle Making Supplies

Soy candles are fun to make and just require a few basic supplies. Soy is an excellent choice for many reasons. It is more environmentally friendly than paraffin wax and it is much more affordable than beeswax. Soy candles are fully customizable and can be made in many different colors and scents. They make great gifts for just about anyone. The things that you need can be purchased either in a craft store or on the internet.

There are a wide variety of soy candle making supplies available for purchase. When you purchase soy candle making supplies you will have to select a type of soy wax, dye and fragrance. Soy candle wax comes in different forms. You can buy it as flakes, slabs or blocks. Flakes are a good choice if you will only be making a few candles. They are easier to handle and can be melted right in the microwave.

Another element to consider is the wicks you will use. The wick is a big factor in how well your candle will ultimately burn. It needs to be the correct size for your candle or container. You can find good information on the right wick in books and on the internet, but sometimes the best teacher is trial and error. Different wicks work well with different containers. Each time you use a new container type, you will need to take another look at wicks.

There are three types of wicks available; un-tabbed, pre-tabbed and spools. The easiest type to use is the pre-tabbed variety. For these types of wicks you will need little sticky pieces called wick stick-ums. The wick stick ums help the wicks stick to the bottom of the container. Another accessory when it comes to wicks is a wick bar. These sit across the top of the container and hold your wick upright as the candle cools and hardens.

There are several types of containers that you can use for soy candles. Jars are a very popular choice and there are many types of jars to choose from. Jelly jars will give your soy candles a bit of country charm while apothecary jars are a classic choice. If you want something more modern you can try a cube jar or tureen jar. When you need your jar to be portable you can use a travel tin.

You can give your candle a lovely scent using fragrance oils. There are many choices when it comes to candle scents. You can select from fragrances that emulate food such as muffins or cookies. There are also floral and plan scents like jasmine and rose. If you want your candles to be all natural you can use essential oils to scent your candles.

You can always leave your candles white, which is an appealing choice if you are making an all natural candle with essential oils; or you can use dyes to make your candle on of a rainbow of colors. There are several forms of dye that are made just for use with soy wax. They come in the form of dye blocks, chips or liquid dyes. For simple color you can use one dye at a time or you can make custom colors by blending the dyes.

There are miscellaneous supplies you will need as well. If you are going to sell your candles you can buy labels for the bottom of the jars. You can also buy molds or latex to make your own molds if you want your candles to be in different shapes. Pouring pitchers are available to melt larger amounts of wax for larger projects.

The options can seem overwhelming at first. When you begin making candles just select one type of jar, wax and wick. Perfect making this one type of candle before moving on and making other kinds of soy candles; and working with other types of soy candle making supplies. You can purchase your supplies either in stores or on the internet. Buying on the internet is convenient and can be done at any time of day in your pajamas. Candle making is a rewarding hobby and can be made into a lucrative business if you really develop a passion for it.
